The best thing is that it’s so close: The spa town of Meran, second largest city in South Tyrol, is just a short walk from our Romantik Hotel Oberwirt. Even back in the 19th century, Meran was famed as a "climatic winter resort" due to its mild, soothing climate. The city gained further prominence when Empress Sissi came here: As a result, the sleepy little town went on to become a luxury resort, and its lush parks and lush gardens attracted endless attention.
Back in the present day, Meran has by no means fallen asleep again; the traditional alleys are complemented by a fresh atmosphere where you will find both ancient buildings and trendy stores to shop and while away the time.
Alongside sightseeing and taking in the culture, the narrow alleys of the inner town of Meran are a wonderful place for a stroll. Here are a few of our recommendations for you.
Shopping
The arcades, hallmark of Meran, date back to the 13th century and are not only beautiful to behold but are also a fabulous area for shopping lovers. In the shops under the arcades, you will find everything you could wish for, from delicatessens to high fashion.
Culture & Architecture
Countless magnificent Art Nouveau buildings with shapely oriels and turrets adorn the cityscape of Meran, including the dome-crowned spa, the city theatre and the Art Nouveau “Wandelhalle “ arcade of the winter promenade on the right bank of the Passer.
Museums
In addition to activities and culture, Meran and the surrounding area also boast a number of museums, including, to name a few, the National Museum of Tourism in Trauttmansdorff Castle, the Provincial Castle and the Wine Museum in Rametz Castle. And a whole lot more. Tell us what you like and we’ll be delighted to advise you on where to go!
