There are around 800 castles and fortresses to admire throughout South Tyrol – no wonder it is one of the most castle-rich regions in Europe. It’s no surprise that the Merano area boasts a considerable number of castles and stately palaces. After all, Merano was once the residence of the Tyrolean princes and, as the capital of Tyrol, an important center of power.

"Our small town of Marling is home to its own proud castle. But even when you visit our neighboring towns like Lana, Schenna, Tisens, or Prissian, you can admire a rich castle culture. Here are some of our favorite buildings near Oberwirt.
Lebenberg Castle
Built as a castle in 1240 in Marling, Schloss Lebenberg with its Rococo elements and Venetian mirrors is considered the grandest castle complex of the Burggrafenamt.
Trauttmansdorff Castle
Undoubtedly the most famous castle in Meran. It was once a favored vacation destination of Empress “Sissi” and is known for its beautiful botanical gardens.
Prince’s Castle Meran
Today a museum, this castle was once the residence of the Tyrolean rulers, located right in the heart of Meran. It was built in 1470 by Archduke Sigmund.
